OFFICIAL RULES OF LADDER GOLF:
Ladder Golf® is played with 2 or more players or teams. Each player has 3 golf balls. A bola is 2 golf balls connected by a nylon rope. The object of the game is to wrap your bolas around the rungs of the playing ladder. Each ladder consists of 3 rungs: top, middle, and bottom. Improper use of the game can cause injury or damage to the game itself or other objects nearby.
HOW TO PLAY: Before starting play, set up the ladders 4.5 m/5 paces apart (if playing with a single ladder, draw a line 5 paces from the ladder). This is called the throwing line. During the toss, any player who crosses the throwing line during play commits a foul and the throw is void. Ladder Golf® is played in rounds, with all players throwing 3 bolas in each round. The starting team/player is determined by a coin toss. The first player must throw all 3 bolas before the next player may throw their bolas. Bolas are thrown one at a time and from the bottom up the ladder. The winner of each round wins the first throw in the next round. Games are played to an exact total of 21 points. To win, a player must be the only player to score exactly 21 points at the end of the round. If a player exceeds the exact total, their points for the round are void. For example: a player with 18 points needs 3 points to score exactly 21. On their next turn, they only need to score 3 points. If after all bolas have been thrown, they score 5 points, none of those points are counted and the player advances to the next round with 18 points. In the event of a tie, the tied players will play as many overtime rounds as needed until one player finishes the entire round with a 2-point lead over the other player. The 2-point rule applies only to overtime rounds. During normal play, the first player/team to score exactly 21 points wins.
TEAM GAME: Four players can play Ladder Golf®, alternating between team members for each round. Additional bolas may be purchased and up to 4 players may play individually on the same ladder. In the case of multiple ladders, 2 players from opposing teams would be on one side and 2 other players on an alternate side. One side throws all bolas, and after the points are tallied, the opposing side throws the bolas back.
SCORING AND POINTS: Once both teams have thrown all their bolas, the score is determined by the bolas still hanging on the rungs. Bolas that are knocked down during play do not count as points. Only those that are hanging when all bolas have been thrown are counted. Points are determined by the rung on which the bola is wrapped: • 3 points: Top rung • 2 points: Middle rung • 1 point: Bottom rung Optional Bonus Point: Players can earn a 1 point bonus by hanging all 3 bolas on the same rung or by hanging a bola on all 3 rungs (top, middle, bottom) in one round. The maximum points a single player can earn in a round is 10 points: achieved by hanging all 3 bolas on the top rung.
GAME ETIQUETTE: Unlike golf, basic Ladder Golf® etiquette involves players making as many comments, sounds or movements as possible to distract their opponents during play. Touching another player while throwing is prohibited. At no point in the game may a player approach the ladder before the current round of play has ended.
